HONG KONG REDUXHong Kong has experienced a tremendous metamorphosis over the last 100 years. As Hong Kong earned its mega-city and financial center status in Asia, Hong Kongers, and others who lived through its rapid transformation, often reflect on Hong Kong’s rich history.In Post-World War II Hong Kong, many forms of culture flourished. A political, literary and artistic community formed the basis of Hong Kong’s cultural scene. Deep relationships formed in Hong Kong of the 1950s and some key influencers remained to shape the cultural landscape of Hong Kong. Others continued their journey to become leading diaspora throughout Asia and the West.The new series, Hong Kong Redux shares a glimpse into Hong Kong’s cultural past beginning with the series opener “Bird Talk – A Discussion of Xu Xu’s Life and Works” and continues throughout the fall as we share a look back and feature expert discussions on the arts Chinese Opera/Music, Film, Literature, Radio and more. We’ll also be hosting two exhibitions to help create the visual ethos for our collective remembrance for this amazing city.Hong Kong Redux: “Bird Talk” – A Discussion of Xu Xu’s Life and WorksProfessor Haun Saussy leads a discussion with Professor Frederik Green regarding Green’s new book, “Bird Talk and Other Stories by Xu Xu.” Xu Xu was a pivotal figure in Chinese literature of the 20th Century. As an exile who made Hong Kong his home in the 1950s, Xu Xu helped frame modern Hong Kong literary culture – strands of those works can be found in a variety of artistic mediums from that time and even today. Green gives insight into China’s turbulent and unique twentieth century through passages from his book that he reads and then dissects. Green goes on to discuss his experiences and the challenges he faced in translating Xu Xu’s stories. By 1967, a million of Hong Kong people (a quarter of the population then), lived in overcrowded resettlement estates. The resettlement programme had become well-known internationally. Life in resettlement estates was an important shared memory among many Hong Kong people.Illustrated with rare historical photos, Tim Ko, Historian-in-Residence of UChicago Yuen Campus Hong Kong, will share with the audience the stories and primary objective of the resettlement programme, which was always mistakenly believed to be housing refugees per se. This is, in fact, far from the truth.和寮屋一樣，徙置計劃是戰後香港房屋發展的一大特徵。

及至1967年，已有一百萬香港人（佔當時人口的四分之一）生活在環境擠迫的徙置區。在上世紀的六十年代，該計劃在國際上已廣為人知。徙置區的生活是許多香港人重要的共同集體回憶。芝加哥大學香港校園駐場歷史學家高添強先生將以罕見的歷史照片作說明，與聽眾分享徙置計劃的來龍去脈和其他故事。一直以來，不少人相信計劃是為安置難民而設，實情卻相去甚遠。

Speaker 講者:Mr. KO Tim Keung 高添強先生Mr. KO Tim Keung, Historian-in-Residence, was formerly council member of the Royal Asiatic Society (Hong Kong Branch) and a member of the Antiquities Advisory Board. He also served as a museum expert adviser for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. At present, he is an advisor for the Collection Committee of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. He has written extensively on various aspects of Hong Kong history.高添強先生，芝加哥大學香港校園駐場歷史學家，前皇家亞洲學會（香港分會）幹事、古物諮詢委員會成員、康樂及文化署博物館專家顧問，現為香港海事博物館館藏委員會成員，曾出版多本與香港歷史有關的專著。

Hong Kong Redux: Wucius Wong’s Innovations in Ink - Capturing Quintessential Hong KongIn this Yuen Campus Lecture Series program, renowned international artist Wucius Wong looks back at an illustrious career spanning over six decades during which he experimented with ink in Hong Kong.Mark Barnekow, Executive Director of the University of Chicago, Francis and Rose Yuen Campus Hong Kong, interviews the artist as the two reflect upon Hong Kong as the subject of Wong’s paintings in the 1950s-1970s, the cultural ethos of Hong Kong, and its emerging artistic influencers and movements. Wong shares his reflections of Hong Kong as a city transitioning from a quaint port town to a sprawling city and describes the influences of teachers, of peers, and of the post-war American art scene on his career. He worked as assistant curator at the City Museum and Art Gallery and principal lecturer at the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic from 1967 to 1984. He received the John D. Rockefeller Fund Grant in 1971, and the Emeritus Fellowship of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 1998. The Hong Kong Museum of Art presented his retrospective exhibition in 2006, and the Hong Kong SAR Government honored him with the Bronze Bauhinia Star Medal in 2007. He is also the only visual artist honored with the Life Achievement Award from the HK Arts Development Council in 2016 which is the top award from the Council. He is currently Adjunct Professor of the Fine Arts Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, expert adviser to the Leisure and Culture Department, committee member of the Chinese Painting Institute in Beijing, and founding chairman of the Chinese Painting Institute in Hong Kong. Hong Kong, a British colony at that time, was one of the first targets of the Japanese forces. The invading Japanese force of around 35,000 strong faced a garrison of 13,500 consisting of British, Indian, Canadian, and local Hong Kong troops.Over the period of eighteen days, the two forces fought in the New Territories, Kowloon, and Hong Kong Island and the garrison surrendered on the afternoon of 25 December 1941. Hong Kong then entered a period of Japanese rule that lasted for three years and eight months.The spatial history project “Hong Kong 1941” aims to create an interactive map about the Battle of Hong Kong and offers a historical database for educators, tourists, and conservation professionals. The talk by Dr. Kwong Chi Man will focus on the making of the interactive web map, the use of historical sources, and the utilization of geographical information systems in academic and public histories. After the talk, Dr. Kwong will guide the participants to visit the Jubilee Battery and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Heritage Courtyard and Interpretation Centre on the University of Chicago Yuen Campus on Mount Davis.The talk will be in Cantonese.1941年12月8日，太平洋戰爭爆發，時為英國殖民地的香港首當其衝，成為日軍進攻的目標之一。

Speaker 講者:KWONG CHI MAN is an associate professor in the history department of Hong Kong Baptist University. He specializes in the military and naval history of modern East Asia, particularly from the Sino-Japanese War (1894–95) to the 1970s. He has published Eastern Fortress A Military History of Hong Kong, 1840–1970 (co-authored, Hong Kong Book Prize 2019) and War and Geopolitics in Interwar Manchuria. His works can also be found in Modern Asian Studies, War in History, and Journal of Military History.鄺智文博士現為浸會大學歷史系副教授。

他的研究興趣為甲午戰爭（1894-95）至1970年代之的東亞軍事和海軍史。他曾出版《東方堡壘：香港軍事史（1840-1970）[合著，2019年香港書獎]》和《War and Geopolitics in Interwar Manchuria》。他的論文可見於Modern Asian Studies、War in History，以及Journal of Military History。
