《TAIPEI TIMES》 Mandopop celebrated at 37th Golden Melody Awards

/ Staff writer, with CNA and Reuters Taiwanese pop star Jolin Tsai （蔡依林） won Album of the Year at the 37th Golden Melody Awards on Saturday for Pleasure, capping off a successful night after also taking home Best Mandarin Female Singer and Best Vocal Album Recording.

Tsai prevailed over five fellow nominees, including Best Taiwanese Album winner Soft Hearted （做一個惜情軟心的人） by Ricky Hsiao （蕭煌奇）, Best Hakka Album winner Ngai by Huang Yu-han （黃宇寒） and Best Indigenous Language Album winner Masonolay i Cepo by Outlet Drift （漂流出口）.

The Album of the Year victory was Tsai’s second in the category. She previously won the top honor in 2019 for Ugly Beauty.

Tsai’s Best Mandarin Female Singer award was her second victory in the category. She previously won the honor for Dancing Diva （舞孃） in 2007.

On Saturday Tsai prevailed over fellow nominees including award-winning singer Julia Peng （彭佳慧）, up-and-coming singers Hung Pei-yu （洪佩瑜） and Erika Liu （劉艾立）, rapper Hsien Ching （陳嫺靜） and Chinese singer Shan Yichun （單依純）.

Also winning three awards was Ayal Komod, also known as Chang A-ye （張震嶽）, taking home Best Mandarin Album for Go With The Flow （跟著感覺走）, Best Mandarin Male Singer and Best Composer.

In the Best Mandarin Male Singer category, Ayal Komod beat fellow nominees pop star Nickthereal （周湯豪）, decorated singer-songwriter Crowd Lu （盧廣仲）, rapper Gummy B and Chinese singer Jude Chiu （裘德） to claim the award.

Sunset Rollercoaster won Best Band, marking the group’s second win in the category.

The band prevailed over fellow nominees Icyball, Outlet Drift, Your Woman Sleep With Others, Accusefive, Sweet John and Tizzy Bac.

Song of the Year went to Happiness Is Singing Movie （幸福在歌唱）, the theme song from the film Sunshine Women’s Choir （陽光女子合唱團）, performed by singer A-Lin.

Female idol group Genblue won Best Vocal Group. Saturday’s awards celebrate not only Mandopop but artists singing in Tai-gi （also known as Taiwanese, Taiwanese Hokkien or Hoklo）, Hakka and indigenous languages like Paiwan.

Best Hakka singer Sarah Chan （陳以諾） for the album Blue Hour Bloom （慢花誌）.

Chinese artists have largely stayed away from the Golden Melody Awards in the past few years given Taiwan-China tensions.

While China’s Chiu and Shan Yichun （單依純） received nominations, neither attended, although Hong Kong’s Karen Mok （莫文蔚） sang and presented, her first appearance at the awards in a decade.
